Om-Tat-Sat; ‘Daata’ is in my remembrance!
We are one of the five basic elements of this universe. ‘We’ means the ‘Soul’, which is immortal, eternal. And we enter in the perishable material nature, this body. Our body is mortal because it is part of material nature. An immortal entity enters a mortal entity.
If coming to this world in the form of a body is life, then many times a question arises in the mind, ‘What is the best thing in this life?’ If we analyze it carefully and consciously, we will find that whatever is true, whatever is unchangeable and certain in this life, must be the best thing. Because there can be neither beauty nor joy in falsehood and uncertainty.
So, what is certain in this life?
Suppose you are in the quest for bliss. You have your own concept of happiness and that concept depends on what is your current situation or condition. Suppose there is a poor man. So, his imagination of happiness would probably be to get a little more of something such as food, money, a house etc. When his wish is fulfilled, his imagination of happiness will take another leap to get even more. And these surges of desire will keep happening. One after another, and that happiness will continue to stand somewhere far away. So that objective of happiness and joy is nowhere to be found. Why? Because what this person is trying to achieve is not something that is certainly a certain thing in life. As the imagination of that joy is not certain, it will never happen.
In your life, in your whole life, from birth to youth and old age, what is hundred percent certain must be the best thing. And that thing is ‘death’. In this material world, the end of life means leaving our bodies. This is the only unchanging truth. There is only one thing certain in life and that is death. Your body has a certain fixed duration on the earth, then you have to depart from the body, because the body is mortal. There can be ups and downs in life. Happiness can be less or more. But what is absolutely certain in life is death. And this is the unshakable truth and certainty of life. Death is the destination of our life. It is a matter of thinking for all of us how can the destination of life be bad. How can the only truth of life, death, be wrong? Death is certain, that is the destination of this life.
Now let us analyze it a little differently. What is that thing in life which despite knowing mind rejects? What is that thing in life we are most scared of? And that thing is also death. We are afraid of death which is the only certainty in life. That is the only sure thing in this life that we will get from life. Then why be afraid of it? Due to the conditioning of the society, and due to the impressions of our past actions in previous births, our mind is also conditioned. The fact is that what mind rejects, what mind is scared of can, in fact, be the best thing.
Soldiers are martyred at the border and we call it the supreme sacrifice. It is because that is the biggest fear of the mind and hence the biggest sacrifice. There is only one thing from which we run away and that is death. There is only one biggest fear and that is death. And I say this that from whom the mind runs away, from which the mind is feeling scared, which the mind does not want to accept despite knowing the truth, can possibly be the biggest gift of life. That can be the greatest happiness, freedom and peace. Death is peace.
No matter how much wealth you have, you will always have the desire for more. Therefore, we are able to attain joy or feel happy and content.
Imagine that you are in a deep sleep. And when you are asleep, you are not even aware of whether you have any wealth or not. In such deep sleep, you are not even aware of your body, you have nothing. And when you wake up from such sleep, you feel happy and satisfied. So, joy is in peace. Death is the greatest peace. That is the destination of this life. That’s why death is the greatest happiness.
Just imagine if there is no death, no one dies after taking birth, everyone becomes immortal. What will happen in this world? ..A never ending race to collect wealth and other things will never stop and this race will never end. Imagine this world. Everyone will be rushing constantly, engaging in fights and conflicts. The fact is that our world is a liveable place because we die, we know that we will die and there may be next birth. The fantasy of the next birth stops us from wrongdoings because of the belief that otherwise you will get punished in the next birth. So, something good is happening in this world out of fear. So, I believe that the greatest happiness in this life is the certainty of death.
And we have a purpose in taking birth in this material world. We want moksha, liberation from life. The purpose of this life, in fact, is to attain that state, moksha, and merging into ‘Daata’ forever.
Now you will ask that if death is the greatest happiness, then what is the greatest sorrow of life?
So, in the same way, the one which the mind desires the most, meditates the most, is most attracted towards, that is the greatest sorrow. Just think that what is that thing which the mind desires the most, towards which it is most attracted? You will find that it is our body. The desire for the body, attraction towards the body, fear of pain and suffering of the body, our care for the body, nurturing it, adorning the body, etc. are nothing but the yearning of the mind towards the body. The body is the biggest attraction. And that is why it is our biggest sorrow.
So, the biggest happiness of this life is death. And the biggest sorrow is the body. That is why there is a desire to attain mukti, liberation – moksha. Attainment of liberation is the goal of our birth in this life – freedom from the body forever, liberation forever. In simple words, the meaning of attaining moksha is that one does not have to come again and again by taking birth in this world through body.
It is very important to think about all these things and understand them on the spiritual path, because only then we can move towards our goal of liberation, because of which we, the soul, a living being, comes in this material world through body. And the day the fear of death goes away from your mind, you will start living in the present, and your spiritual journey will start prolonging towards its destination.
With these thoughts, I thank all of you and pray to the ‘Daata’ to give us wisdom, so that we can move towards achieving the purpose of life.
