Sanatana Dharma – Seven Qualities of the Soul

(Based on the live discourse of Param Dwij)

Om-Tat-Sat; ‘Daata’ is in my remembrance!

We enter this life. We take a body to come into this life. By ‘we’, I mean the soul, which is immortal. Soul is immortal and body is mortal as the body is the part of material nature. So, an immortal enters something which is mortal.

Apart from the soul, God (the Supreme consciousness) and ‘kaal’ (Time – the duration of the existence of whole universe) are also immortal. So, out of the five basic truths, these are the three basic truths that are eternal. The other two basic truths — material nature and ‘karma’ (the actions and their effects) are not eternal. Material nature temporary and has its own time fixed by the energies of the God. ‘Karma’ may appear to be eternal because of the prolonged effects of ‘karma’, but in reality, the effects of ‘karma’ can be destroyed or eliminated.

So, what is the purpose of the soul, an immortal being, entering the body, mortal material nature? There must be some reason, otherwise, why an immortal have to come to a mortal?

There is a purpose, and that purpose is to know our ‘Sanatan Dharma’ (eternal religion), to attain it fully within.

What do I mean by Sanatana Dharma? By Sanatan Dharma, I do not imply any organised or sectarian process. By Sanatan Dharma, I am not referring to any particular religion whether it may be Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian, Jain, Buddhist, Jewish, or any other communal process. By Sanatan Dharma, I mean our ‘Mool Sanskars’ – our original nature.

We can explain faith and the basis of those faiths in terms of various organised practices or religions – Hindu, Muslim, Sikh etc. But what I mean by religion is entirely different. If soul is eternal, its religions is also eternal. And, that is eternal religion – Sanatan Dharma – our innate nature, eternal qualities of the soul.

Through conditioning of the society and through actions performed in our various births, we create impressions on the soul which shadow our innate nature, our original ‘sanskars’. So, we desire to remove all those impressions to realise our true state, our original form. Therefore, souls enter this mortal body to realise our Sanatana Dharma fully, and that is the purpose of life – to go through that process of achieving that attainment, and be free from all the defects created by the actions we have performed in our various births and by the effects of those actions on us. You name it Enlightenment, or you call it the attainment of ‘Knowledge’ or liberation. The purpose of coming into this life is to know, realise and achieve those natures fully and completely which are original. To remove those wrong or bad impressions created, you need to take birth and settle all your ‘karma’ for ever. If you are not born in this mortal world, in the body, in this material nature, then you cannot remove those false impressions and cannot achieve your original nature – your eternal religion, Sanatan Dharma. So, this is the process; this is the task; this is the purpose of this life.

The law of the material world is that it is temporary. It comes into existence, produces some by-products, and disappears. It is temporary existence, which includes our body as well. But beyond this world, beyond this material nature, there is another nature, which is Sanatan, which is eternal. By Sanatan, I mean constant, continuous and eternal, which has neither a beginning nor an end. It always has been and will always be.

Our purpose in coming to this life is to revive our eternal occupation. And with this purpose, you take birth again and again, again and again. And after coming into life, due to social conditioning, we forget our goal; even the search to achieve that purpose does not begin. So, you are born again.

Reviving our Sanatan business, Sanatan qualities is Sanatan Dharma. Sanatan qualities mean those qualities which have always been with you, have always been within you, but have been lost somewhere or are not in their full form and capacity. Therefore, you are not in your full consciousness level and complete state. This must be revived. You must discover them. You must rediscover yourself. This is the religion, this should be our religion, to progress towards achieving this sole purpose of life..

Many times, when asked, I say that I am religious, I know my existence and the existence of the ‘Daata’, I need to follow and practice Sanatan Dharma to realise my originality, my original nature, my true state that is equal to the ‘Daata’ . However, I may not necessarily believe in organised religions and their beliefs, practices and processes.

Our religious philosophy in various religions expresses the idea of faith — belief System. Different religions have different belief systems despite having fundamental similarities. A belief is a belief and can change over time due to changes in the society, culture and life-style or due to your next birth if you believe in that. Today you are a Hindu. You can convert. Your belief system can change. You are a Christian; you can become something else. Your thoughts, your beliefs can change. Beliefs can change over time. You are Hindu, Muslim, Sikh, Christian or whatever else but this acquired faith and belief in this birth will end with this body, and when you are born again, the new faith or belief will depend on where you are born, in which religion, culture or society. But are a soul, you are eternal, you are the same but beliefs change. You are not changing. Only beliefs are changing. The foundation is the same, but the structure keeps on changing and puts undue pressure on the foundation. So, religious faitha are not permanent, not stable, not constant. They may change with time. That’s why all our religions are temporary and short-lived. New religions and beliefs have always emerged and will continue to emerge.

We must know our eternal qualities, which is our innate nature, our Sanatana Dharma that cannot be changed – our original ‘sanskaras’, our original qualities. Our fundamental values are the essential qualities of our soul. Our must realise our real nature, and this is our real Dharma, our true religion that we follow. Practicing progressing towards achieving this aim of life is our true religion.

What are the internal eternal qualities of the soul or what is our original nature?

There are seven types of fundamental nature or qualities, which are part of the soul, which is our true nature, our original state. But currently they are not at their full stage and that is why we have this restlessness, this whining because of which we take repeated births.

What are those seven qualities of the soul?

The first quality is peace. In our whole life, what we desire the most and run after the most to get is peace. Have you ever thought that what you seek from outside, what you are trying to get from outside world, is your fundamental nature, Is your basic temperament is your innate quality? But because it has been lost due to the conditioning of the society or your past ‘karmas’ and their effects, you want it desperately. There is nothing wrong but the problem is that what you have it inside you, you are trying to get it from outside. This is the difficulty and that is why you don’t get it. It has to be understood. And for this, the path of spirituality is the only way. And, the day you achieve all your seven qualities in full, you will become a complete whole for never to reborn – ‘Moksha’, liberation from life.

The second fundamental nature is happiness. This is our basic nature, our internal quality — the State of Ever Happiness. But are we happy? The stge of Ever Happiness is lost somewhere. Isn’t it? We must re-get it, for always, forever. And, that is the desperation. You must have seen twenty days old, fifteen days old or one-month-old child lying on the bed and smiling for nothing. No one is talking to him; no one is showing him anything; no one is feeding him. He is smiling and is naturally in the state of happiness. You must recognise that this happiness is naturally your own. Bring it back by rediscovering yourself in a way that it becomes permanent. Your second fundamental quality – ‘Happiness’.

And the third fundamental nature is Shakti, Power. You are powerful because souls are powerful. I am not talking about this body or the material world but about you. You are a part of God in the form of a soul. Therefore, you are omnipotent. You can achieve anything if you are determined. And by attaining, I do not mean attaining the things of the material world but attaining your essential qualities.

And the fourth one is Gyan, knowledge. Knowledge is the natural quality of the soul, the genuinely original nature of the soul, full of knowledge about the self and ‘Brahm’. By knowledge, I do not mean you know maths, science, or languages. By knowledge, I mean spiritual knowledge. That sense of integration, that unifying vision which sees the whole universe as one. That integration, that feeling of a unitary visualisation of which you are a part and parcel. When you realise your existence, you do not feel any difference, you do not see yourself as different. That knowledge – the knowledge of the soul and the Supreme Soul – Knowledge of the Self and ‘Brahm’.

And the fifth quality of the soul is love. We spend our whole life to get love from others. The whole life is spent in the search of love. The love, which is your own innate nature, natural quality, soul’s original own ‘sanskar’. The thing which you already have in full in you. Soul is filled with love, you are full of love. What is the justification for asking someone or expecting to be given to you by someone, which you are already full of? So, recognising and realising these qualities which are lost or have been shadowed is the right religion, Eternal Religion,  Sanatan Dharma – the only aim of this life.

And our sixth nature is of abundance joy at all times – Bliss. That blissful state in which there is true experience and realisation of the Truth, an absolute clarity of things and facts, where there is no dilemma, no crisis, no restlessness – just nothing but only Bliss – ‘Anand’.

And the seventh nature of the soul, our seventh ‘prakriti’ is purity. Everything can be impure in this material world but if anything is sacred, anything is pure, anything is clean, that is the soul. Purity is our natural quality.

Sanatana Dharma is to attain these seven natural qualities in their complete form. This is the Sanatan Religion to attain our original eternal stage. To move towards the attainment of one’s original nature is religion. In fact, the path of different faiths should also go in this direction so that you we can achieve our natural nature. And the day you get your original nature completely, on the same day, you will not be yourself but will feel equal to God, with all His qualities in full quantities.

Our fundamental qualities, initial impressions, original ‘sanskars’ cannot be taken away from us. They are ours and are just temporarily lost. We must seek them, have them back and rediscover ourselves. And, we become a symbol that displays nothing else but only peace, happiness, power, wisdom, love, joy, and purity. Remember that we as soul are full of these qualities and our fundamental nature cannot be taken away from us, just as heat and light cannot be taken away from fire and as liquidity cannot be taken away from liquids. Similarly, our true nature cannot be separated from us. Our actual values are our nature and are our constant companions. They are eternal, and that is why these lasting qualities are our eternal religion. Our Sanatan Dharma cannot be changed by different religious faiths or change of religion.

I pray that you make this thought a beginning on your spiritual path. You can do it by following any religious faiths. But this understanding is essential for spiritual progress.

My best wishes are with you.
